A new digital platform called Scopio by Beckman Coulter has been introduced at Croydon Hospital for blood film morphology. The new platform can do a full field scan, which means that it is scanning the entire blood film, including feathery edge of the blood film, which is why it is able to look at almost all, if not all, cell types present on that particular film. It uses artificial intelligence technology to analyse a vast number of cells and the users is able to see all the cells, rather that just a selected field, which was previously the case,
The laboratory at Croydon Hospital is also currently validating the Scopio X100, which will allow digitalised blood films to be shared across the South West London Pathology (SWLP) network. This will help reduce turnaround times for blood film reviews across the network by at least 60%.
Scopio will enable haematology consultants and registrars to review referred blood films anywhere, particularly out of hours.
