The team in Blood Transfusion at Croydon Hospital have been working hard to reduce wastage of blood products. They have been doing this by reassessing the holding stock levels, rotation of stock and usage of short-dated units.
Procedural changes were put in place in December 2020 and there has already been a significant reduction in wastage in that time. During 2020 to 2021, a total of 291 units were wasted while during 2021 – 2022 so far, only a total of 57 units have been wasted. This is a year-on-year reduction of around 75%.
