This week, we marked the 7th annual Biomedical Science Day with stands at St George’s, St Helier and Croydon university hospitals highlighting the amazing and vital work that biomedical scientists do to support our patients.
Visitors were able to analyse fake samples using urine dip strips, use chocolate agar plates to show how sample streaking is done in microbiology and try out a 20 microlitre pipette to show how accurate volume is taken for analysis. Passers-by were also quizzed on what blood components dummy patients needed.
Biomedical Science Day provides an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the work of biomedical scientists across the country who are often the unsung heroes of healthcare, despite being at the heart of healthcare.
Biomedical scientists conduct laboratory and scientific tests to support the diagnosis and treatment of disease. They are critical to the running of healthcare science laboratories, A&E, operating theatres and many other hospital departments. They investigate a wide range of clinical conditions, from blood disorders and cancer to hepatitis and meningitis, providing results critical to patient care.
SWLP’s 650 staff perform over 28 million tests a year across six sites and seven locations, covering south west London and stretching as far as the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in north west London. Over 8,000 samples are booked in every day for testing and the network serves over 500 GP practice throughout England and Wales.
