Our cellular pathology service offers a comprehensive range of histopathology, cytopathology, perinatal pathology and hospital autopsy services.
Our expertise is wide ranging and is supported by experienced clinical and scientific staff – many of whom contribute to the teaching of medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
All our consultants have a sub-specialty interest and attend multi-disciplinary team meetings and national external quality assessment schemes relevant to their areas of interest.
Our hub laboratory for cellular pathology is based at St George’s Hospital. Facilities include:
- fully equipped video-conferencing rooms used for on-site
- remote multi-disciplinary team meetings
The histopathology laboratory deals with biopsies, excisions and resection specimens, as well as frozen sections.
We provide routine histopathological diagnoses using both standard techniques and advanced diagnostics including immunocyto-chemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
Skin cases form our largest histopathology specialty – the melanoma unit based at St George’s Hospital is a regional referral centre and is one of the busiest melanoma units in the UK.
The hub laboratory is a tertiary referral centre for urology and thoracic surgery and a regional centre for the NHS breast screening programme and the NHS bowel cancer screening programme.
We are part of the London Deanery Histopathology Training Scheme for trainee histocytopathologists.
We provide diagnostic cytology using cells from tissue fluids such as urine and sputum. We also use scrapings, washings and brushings from various parts of the body such as the skin and cervix.
We have a consultant-led fine needle aspiration service for palpable lumps. Our consultants also assist with CT, ultrasound and endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration cytology.
We provide diagnostic services for the national NHS Cervical Screening Programme using liquid-based cytology.
