Dr Rachel Wheeler

Clinical Lead for Immunology and PRU

Based at: St George's Hospital

Rachel is a Consultant Clinical Scientist in Immunology, with a specialist interest in cryoproteins. She has worked in the department since 2005, was appointed as a Consultant in February 2018 and succeeded Dr Joanna Sheldon as Clinical Lead in June 2020.

Rachel studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, before moving to Manchester for her PhD. Her PhD work looked at the role of cytokines in the central nervous system, and she continued this work as a postdoctoral fellow at Montreal Neurological Institute in Canada.

Rachel started training as a Clinical Scientist under Dr. Joanna Sheldon in 2005. Her training included a placement at Great Ormond Street Hospital where, together with Dr Kimberly Gilmour, she developed a novel screening test for patients with primary haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

Rachel has a specialist interest in the use of protein electrophoresis in diagnostics, particularly relating to myeloma and cryoglobulins.

Scopio digital platform introduced at Croydon Hospital for blood film morphology

A new digital platform called Scopio by Beckman Coulter has been introduced at Croydon Hospital for blood film morphology. The new platform can do a full field scan, which means that it is scanning the entire blood film, including feathery edge of the blood film, which is why it is able to look at almost all, if not all, cell types present on that particular film.
