Liquid swabs are being introduced for all microbiology samples. These swabs will replace the current charcoal swabs.
This change is due to a significant investment in automated processes to improve the quality of the services provided to patients. The liquid swabs will allow the testing process to be automated, resulting in a faster turnaround time for results compared to the current charcoal swabs.
Both the charcoal and liquid swabs will be accepted until 1 September 2025. After this date, samples collected using charcoal swabs may not be accepted.
The swabs can be ordered in the usual way and are available on the SWLP Consumables Portal..
