The Immunology Laboratory is undergoing a major upgrade in partnership with Siemens. The project includes installation of a new automated sample handling system, consolidation of lab testing onto fewer analytical platforms and repatriation of many tests.
This upgrade will streamline processes, expand our test repertoire and increase capacity, future-proofing the service.
The team are working hard to keep disruption to a minimum but some delays to testing are expected to last until April 2026. Contact details for any enquiries are below.

UKAS update – July 2026
Service update:
There are backlogs in two areas of the laboratory caused by our transition onto the new automated sample handling system. This is particularly affecting:
- TTG antibodies
- immunoglobulins and protein electrophoresis
- dsDNA and ENA antibodies
- CCP antibodies.
There are delays to oligoclonal bands and alpha-1 antitrypsin phenotyping due to staffing shortage but these tests are still running.
The team are working hard to resolve these issues as quickly as possible and apologise for the disruption to service.
The current Immunology Laboratory and Protein Reference Unit repertoire is below, with tests that have had a change in method highlighted.
