Haematology

Cellular Pathology

Our Haematology service is involved in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with disorders of the blood and bone marrow, such as: sickle cell disease, anaemia, leukaemia and related blood cancers, clotting disorders and bleeding problems such as haemophilia.

Our routine tests include:

  • Full blood counts (FBC)
  • Reticulocyte Count
  • Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)
  • Blood Film Examination
  • Clotting Screen
  • D-Dimers
  • International Normalised Ratio (INR)
  • Infectious Mononucleosis (I.M) also known as a Paul Bunnell (PB)  test

Our specialist haematology services include:

Haemostasis

  • Investigating abnormal bleeding and initiating and monitoring anticoagulant therapy
  • We are part of a regional service for diagnosis and management of haemophilia and thrombophilia

Haemoglobinopathy screening and investigations

Identification of disorders of haemoglobin production such as sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and many other haemoglobin
variants.

Cell markers/immunophenotyping

We can test for cell markers using blood samples and bone marrow tests to distinguish between different cell types. We offer flow cytometry which tests blood samples for cancerous cells and a wide range of non-malignant haematological conditions at the hub lab.

Leukaemia diagnosis

We provide services for diagnosis of leukaemia, lymphoma and immune monitoring using specialist tests.

Aplastic anaemia and bone marrow failure syndromes

  • We provide a wide range of diagnostic services for these    conditions.
  • We also provide specialist bone marrow examinations to help diagnose haematology disorders.
